Volunteer Opportunities
The Musquodoboit Harbour Railway Museum is run by the Musquodoboit Harbour Heritage Society, a dedicated team of volunteers. It is the work of this group, partnerships with other local volunteer partner organizations, and the generosity of our community, that has seen the museum grow and thrive over these past fifty years. This season, as we ease back into a regular schedule and lineup of events, we would appreciate your help more than ever!
Specifically, we have unique and flexible volunteer opportunities for all ages and skills, including;
Museum Greeters
Do you love chatting with your community, and getting to know visitors to our area? Be the friendly face of our village and share your knowledge. Responsible for “front-line” duties at the museum.
Specific Duties include:

Welcoming guests
-
Providing information on the Museum / Museum Site
-
Providing tourist information
-
Handling small amounts of money for gift shop purchases
-
Recording visitor numbers
-
Answering phones
Qualifications:

Enjoy working with the public
-
Good oral and written communication skills
-
Works well independently and with a team
Time commitment: 4 - 6 hours per shift
Museum Maintenance & Groundskeeping
Help revive the glory of our station, grounds, and rail cars! It takes a little elbow grease to keep this place on track and looking neat as a pin. Help with planting, pruning, painting, raking, building, and more!
Specific Duties:

General grounds maintenance duties (clearing brush, maintaining tracks, ditches, etc.
-
Weeding and watering plant boxes in summer
-
Raking the ground in the spring/fall
-
Sweeping platform and parking lot
-
Monitoring garbage containers
-
Other duties as required
Qualifications:

Tidy and organized
-
Able to multi-task
-
Likes working outdoors
-
Physically capable
Time Commitment: 10 - 20 hours per month
Museum Building Maintenance
Help to maintain our beautiful heritage CN station building and rolling stock for years to come.
Specific Duties:
-
Ensuring the cleanliness of the Museum/rolling stock
-
Ensuring that the Museum building and equipment is in good working order
-
Monitor building and report any repairs needed
-
Minor repairs as approved by the Board
-
Painting and touch-ups as required
-
Special projects
Qualifications: -
Knowledge of Museum practices

General carpentry skills and familiarity with tools and their operation

Tidy and organized
-
Able to multi-task
Time Commitment: 6 hours per month

Event Assistant
Responsible for assisting and hosting events sponsored by the Museum.
Specific Duties:

Help set up and tear down at the location

Welcome and seat participants

Help serve and replenish as required

General clean up
Events may include but would not be limited to:

Gala Dinner

Concerts
-
Movie Nights
-
Social Tea, Presentations, etc

Public events

Holiday Lighting

Other as assigned

Time Commitment Varies, 4- 6 hours per event
Heritage Animators
Are you interested in volunteering as a heritage animator? We're looking for finely dressed 1920s folk (and their families) to wait on the platform and watch for the train, as well as a boisterous conductor or two to call out the occasional 'All Aboard!' and 'Tickets! Tickets!'. Costumes and complimentary ice cream cones are provided.
Specific Duties:

Provide heritage animation in costume on and around the platform of the station

Assume the role of a railway station patron/staff member
-
Relate stories on the history of rail travel along the Eastern Shore
-
Profile the history of the Railway Station in Musquodoboit Harbour
Qualifications:

Knowledge of the history of Musquodoboit Harbour

Likes working with the public
Time Commitment: 2- 4 hours per shift

Seamstresses
Are you a whiz with a sewing machine? We're looking for someone to help us fix, repurpose, or create period costumes for the use of animators at the Museum.
Specific Duties:

Fix and mend donations of period-appropriate clothing donated to the Museum

Using materials provided, create period costumes for animators
-
Support ongoing programs at the museum
Qualifications:

An interest and commitment to volunteering
-
Skill in repairing and repurposing old clothing
-
Able to take on sewing projects with confidence
Time Commitment: 4 to 16 hours monthly or as needed
